Abstract

The preservation of canned products requires hermetically sealed cans. Attaching the can lid to the can body to create an airtight closure is called double seaming—a process that results in a metal-to-metal seal formed by five interlocking layers of metal (three from the can lid and two from the can body). As the can rotates within the seamer, these layers are rolled, formed, compressed, and ironed tightly to form the hermetic seal. This article offers a primer to help craft brewers understand the double seam, how it’s formed, and why it’s such a critical part of brewing your very best beer and protecting your brand!
