Course Summary

This course will teach you the essential brewing calculations you need to develop a new recipe. Learn why certain calculations and methods work and understand their practical applications. You'll also build a spreadsheet tool that integrates these formulas and learn to apply them to various brewing processes.

Note: This course requires the textbook A Handbook of Basic Brewing Calculations by Stephen R. Holle. Course registrants are eligible for a discount on the book. A discount code will be included in your registration confirmation email.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the critical calculations behind brewing—learn what works, and why.
  • Walk away with a practical tool to aid in recipe development.

Weekly Course Structure

  • Recorded Lessons: Watch detailed lessons on the week's topic, supplemented with examples, case studies, and problem-solving challenges, on your own schedule.
  • Text Reading: Read selected chapters from A Handbook of Basic Brewing Calculations to reinforce lesson concepts.
  • Spreadsheet Building: Instructors will guide you through step-by-step development of a brewing calculation spreadsheet that you can use in your brewing operations.
  • Community Discussions: Connect with course participants in an online community to discuss challenges, share solutions, and get answers to your questions from peers and instructors.
  • Live Discussion and Q&A Sessions: Join live sessions each week for an in-depth discussion of the content, followed by a guided Q&A.

Completion Requirements

To earn a completion certificate, participants will need to:

  • Watch the weekly recorded lesson.
  • Complete approximately two hours of independent learning each week prior to the live session.
  • Access and contribute to the weekly discussion forum.
  • Successfully complete the quiz associated with each module.

Important note: The weekly live sessions are discussion-based. Participants are expected to contribute their ideas, and experience and ask questions. Participants should plan to attend from a quiet location where they can turn cameras on and unmute.
