Scholarships for District Philadelphia Members

​District Philadelphia will award two (2) educational scholarships ​for the 2024 calendar​ year.

The scholarships will cover the cost of tuition (recipients will have to pay for their own travel to and from)

Applicants must chose one (1) of the following two week courses to attend when filing out their application:

Brewery Maintenance Systems Course taking place...
  • Orientation: May 29, 2024 1:00-2:00​ (CT)
  • Virtual Learning: June 6 - July 25, 2024
  • In-Person Learning: August 4-9, 2024 (Minneapolis, MN)

Brewing and Malting Science Course​​ taking place...​
  • Virtual Learning: September 5 - October 24, 2024
  • In-Person Learning: November 3-8, 2024 (Minneapolis, MN)​

Scholarship Applications are due by midnight ​Friday, April 19, 2024

Members are eligible to apply if they meet the following criteria:

  • Applicant must be a current member of the MBAA. 
  • Applicant must have been a member of th​​​e MBAA for a minimum of two (2) consecutive years.
  • Applicant must posses a minimum of two (2) years of professional brewing or allied trade experience.
  • Applicants must complete the application form and obtain the endorsement of two (2) MBAA professional members.

Additional application documents needed are as follows:

  • Professional Résumé.
  • Letters of endorsement from two (2) current members in good standing with MBAA. 
  • Contact information for the above-mentioned endorsees.
  • A short narrative essay addressing the following:
    • Your experience in the brewing industry 
    • How you came to be involved/interested in brewing
    • Your brewing career goals
    • How this scholarship can help you to accomplish these goals 
    • Your special achievements, honors, or recognitions relevant to this scholarship (if any)

Scholarship Applications are due by midnight ​Friday, April 19, 2024.

The scholarship committee will review all of the applications and all applicants will be notified of the decision by April 26, 2024.

We held our first summer social meeting at Victory three years ago. 
 


Since then, the brewery has added a "twelve-pak" of 440-barrel outdoor fermenters: four in 2009 and eight more last year.

QA / Sensory Manager
Flying Dog Brewery Frederick, MD. Gwen is the QA/ Sensory manager for Flying Dog Brewery, Fredrick, Maryland. She holds a BA in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry, and has had extensive in-house sensory training from the Ball Corporation for food, beverage, and beer. She has also completed wine sensory training through the University of California at Davis. Gwen has been a Biology teacher, Environmental Chemist, Microbiologist for Coors, a Flavor Panel leader at Ball Corporation for 9 years, and has spent the past 2 ½ years as the QA / Sensory Director for Flying Dog Brewery. She judges at GABF, WBC, and NABA and teaches QA for the American Brewer’s Guild. She is active in the MBAA, ASBC, and the BA.
Lauren Salazar
Sensory Specialist
New Belgium Brewing Company Fort Collins, CO. Lauren is the Sensory Specialist and a QA team member at New Belgium Brewing Company, where she has been employed for over thirteen years and sensory-focused for over twelve. She developed the sensory program from a basic production check to its present program and is responsible for all facets from design to implementation to re-engineering. Other areas of interest and fun at the brewery include brewery-wide employee brewing and flavor trainings, new product development, beer and food pairing/beer dinners, multivariate statistics, small/esoteric beer production (Lips of Faith program) and NBB’s oak barrel Blender. Lauren is a judge at the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival, she is a faculty member of Siebel Institute of Technology has presented and/or taught short courses for the CBC, WBC, AHA, ASBC, MBAA and others conferences and associations with various other acronyms. Salazar received her BSW from the University of Georgia a lifetime ago and holds a Certificate from UC Davis for Applied Sensory Science and Consumer Testing.
Whitney Thompson
Quality Assurance Manager
Victory Brewing Company Downington, PA. Whitney Thompson holds the position of Quality Assurance Manager for Victory Brewing Company, Downingtown, Pennsylvania where her main focuses are fermentation management and quality sensory evaluation. She holds a BS in Biology from Bridgewater College with a focus in microbiology and began her career in the brewing industry as an apprentice for Ernst August Brauhaus in Hannover, Germany. She was formerly a brewer at Victory Brewing Company, a brewer at Troeg’s Brewing Company, Head Brewer for Appalachian Brewing and a lab technician for Starr Hill Brewing in Crozet, Virginia. Whitney is a fully vetted Great American Beer Festival judge, and is active in numerous brewing organizations including MBAA, ASBC, BA, and the IBD in London.
