Glass Plant Tour

anchorglass.pngWednesday, October 7 • 1:30–3:45 p.m.
Tour fee: $39

Join us for an afternoon at Anchor Glass Container Corporation in Jacksonville, FL. The tour will begin with an overview of the process and then an in-depth walk through the operation.

See how raw materials are batched and fed into a furnace that makes molten glass at temperatures in excess of 1500 degrees F. Molten glass is then fed through forming machines by cutting the glass into elongated cylinders called gobs. Once in the forming machine the glass is shaped and expanded by compressed air for the proper internal capacity and glass thickness. Early stage bottles are hot end coated and then cooled slowly (annealed) to prevent cracking. Cooled bottles are sprayed with a polymer that helps resist scratching and helps with bottle flow at the brewery. Finished bottles are then inspected for defects and then packaged for shipping to customers.

This two-hour tour will be both interesting and features something very few people get to see. For safety, please wear safety shoes (steel or composite), full leg covering (no dresses and shorts allowed), and shirts with at least short sleeves. Unfortunately no cameras (including cell phone pictures) will be allowed in the facility. Safety glasses, a hard hat, and ear plugs will be provided, or bring your own. Transportation to and from the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront will be provided.
