Inge Russell Best Paper Award

Criteria​

The Inge Russell Best Paper Award is presented to a Master Brewers member(s) who have authored the year's best paper in the Technical Quarterly. The award was created to honor Dr. Russell, a former editorial board chair, who over the years gave invaluable technical assistance to Technical Quarterly and to the Master Brewers.

Award Recipients

Awardees will be recognized during the Master Brewers Closing Session at Brewing Summit 2018.

 Eric Johann Samp graduated with a Ph.D. in Applied Statistics from the University of Northern Colorado in 1994 after completing a M.Sc. in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from Southern Illinois University in 1991. Eric also completed a M.Sc. in Brewing and Distilling with distinction from Heriot Watt University in 2009. He has over two decades of experience in the brewing & container manufacturing industry and has published and presented numerous research papers over his career. Eric’s research interests fall in the areas of sulphur dioxide formation, controlling DMS, and flavor stability. Through his research, he is a three-time recipient of the coveted Eric Kneen Memorial Award, which is awarded to the best scientific paper published in the Journal of the American Society of Brewing Chemists and a recipient of the MBAA Presidential Award. Eric serves on editorial review boards for MBAA Technical Quarterly, Journal of the ASBC, and the Journal of the Institute of Brewing & Distilling where Eric is a Fellow Member.  He has held numerous positions in QA, technical brewing, and R&D with Coors, MolsonCoors, and MillerCoors over the past 23 years.  Eric is a certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and is also a Certified Quality Engineer, Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence, and Diploma Brewer.  He is based out of Golden, CO and currently employed with MillerCoors in the quality division where he is the Corporate QA Manager, Craft Supply Chain.

Dana Sedin is the Manager of the Analytical Laboratory at New Belgium Brewing Company. His work covers quality assurance testing, research and development, and support of new product development. He began his career in the brewing industry at Coors Brewing Company where he held both scientific and laboratory management positions for 10 years. He is an active member of the American Society of Brewing Chemists, and from 2008-2012 held the Technical Committee Chair Position on the ASBC’s Board of Directors and is now the President-Elect. Dana has a B.S. in chemistry from California State University, Sacramento and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Colorado, Boulder. In 2011, Dana completed his Post Graduate Certificate in Brewing from the University of Nottingham.  Dana spends his free time traveling, skiing, and playing outdoors with his wife Sarah, and daughter, Elena. He is also a mid-pack ultra-marathoner.
