John Mallett Scholarship​

This annual scholarship covers the full tuition and a travel stipend of $1,200. The scholarship is applied to a different course every year​. The 2024 scholarship applies to the 2024 Brewing & Malting Sci​ence Course (details for next year yet to be determined).

About the Scholarship

John Mallett has been at Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo & Comstock, Michigan since 2001. As Vice President of Operations, he is responsible for logistics, brewing, packaging, and brewery capital projects. John serves on many brewing Technical Committees and Boards including the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, the Brewers Association, the American Malting Barley Association, and the Hop Quality Group. He has written and taught extensively including at the Siebel Institute of Technology. In 2002, he was the recipient of the Institute for Brewing Studies Russell Schehrer Award for brewing innovation.

John has served in numerous capacities over his brewing career; he was a head brewer of Boston's Commonwealth Brewery, Brewmaster at the Old Dominion Brewing Co. in Ashburn, Virginia, and founder and President of SAAZ, an equipment and service provider for breweries both large and small.

He is also the author of Malt: A Practical Guide from Field to Brewhouse, the fourth installation in Brewers Publications’ Brewing Elements series.

Eligibility

Both Master Brewers members and non-members are eligible to apply for the John Mallett Scholarship. 

​The 2024 scholarship covers the cost of tuition and a $1,200 travel stipend to ​the Brewing & Malting Science Course. Key details on the 2024 course will be similar to the 2023 Brewing & Malting Science Course and will be released in early 2024. 

Criteria

​​To qualify for consideration, applicants must submit the online application form along wtih the following documents:​

  • Your resume.
  • A statement describing your passion for brewing.
  • Recommendation from two (2) Master Brewers Professional Members describing how you demonstrate your passion for the art and science of brewing​​.
