The Inge Russell Best Paper Award is presented to member(s) who have authored the year's best paper in the Technical Quarterly. The award was created to honor Dr. Russell, a former editorial board chair, who over the years gave invaluable technical assistance to Technical Quarterly and MBAA.

The Analysis of Green-Beer Flavors Using Liquid-Liquid Extraction and GC-MS

Acacia Cooper grew up in Bend, Oregon, watching her dad homebrew in the garage and growing hops in the garden. She earned her bachelors degree in chemistry at Southern Oregon University, where she conducted the research and laboratory work for the paper “The Analysis of Green-Beer Flavors Using Liquid-Liquid Extraction and GC-MS.” While earning her degree, Acacia worked at Standing Stone Brewing Company as an intern. After graduating she worked at Snake River Brewing Company and then moved to California, and now works at Anderson Valley Brewing Company. As the lead R&D brewer she works extensively to develop new beers for the company.
|Steven Petrovic is a professor of chemistry at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. He has authored or co-authored eighteen peer-reviewed papers in the field of analytical chemistry. His current research is focused on the evaluation of wine astringency using electroanalytical techniques. He consults with southern Oregon winemakers on chemical measurements in the winery. Steven holds a B.S. degree and a Ph.D. degree in chemistry from Ohio University and an M.S. degree in chemistry from Purdue University. He has been a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 1985 and served as secretary of the ACS Analytical Division from 2004–2007.|
After leaving seminary, Larry Chase’s brewpub brewing career began in 1997 when he decided brewing was his higher calling. He learned on the job at the Sioux Falls Brewing Company followed by the American Brewers Guild course in 1998. He has held head brewing positions at 4th St Brewing Company in Sioux City, Iowa and the Granite City Food & Brewery chain. Over the course of 8.5 years Larry helped Granite City grow to 26 locations while developing Granite City’s wort shipping process. Larry landed as the head brewer at Standing Stone Brewing Company in Ashland, Oregon in 2010 where he has successfully mentored four interns who are well on their way in brewing careers.
