Environmental Management Strategies Adopted in the Brewing Industry in South Western Nigeria

Abstract
This paper discusses the environmental strategies and technologies employed by the existing brewing industry in Nigeria to maintain their environment. Four breweries were used in the study and data was collected using questionnaire and interview techniques. The most widely applied strategies are sales of by-products and treatment of waste water in view of the industry's acute waste water problem. Some cleaner production strategies were also in place, namely, reuse of materials especially packaging materials and recovery of C0₂. However, the reuse of packaging materials aggravates the wastewater problem of the breweries. The main environmental technology in the breweries is the presence of oxidation tanks for seeondary treatment of wastewater. The dominance of this treatment technology signifies the low level of environmental technology applied in the breweries. The opportunity for actively promoting cleaner production and waste minimization exists through the adoption of more efficient production and packaging technologies.

Este trabajo trata sobre las estrategias ambientales y tecnologias utilizadas por la industria cervecera en Nigeria para mantener su medio ambiente. Cuatro cervecerias fueron utilizadas en el estudio; los datos fueron tomados utilizando cuestionarios y tecnicas de entrevista. Las tecnicas mas comunes de aplicacion son la venta de sub-producto y el tratamiento de aguas servidas en vista del problema grave de aguas servidas que tiene la industria. Algunas estrategias de produccion mas limpias tambien estan en uso, como por ejemplo reuso de algunos materiales, especialmente de empaque y recuperacion de C0₂. Sinembargo, el reuso de materiales de empaque agrava el problema de aguas servidas en la cerveceria. La principale tecnologia de proteccion del medio ambiente en las cervecerias es el uso de tanques de oxidacion para tratamiento secundario de aguas servidas. El dominio de esta tecnologia de tratamiento demuestra el bajo nivel de tecnologia ambientalista aplicada en las cervecerias. La oportunidad para activamente promover produccion mas limpia y minimizacion de desperdicio exite a travez de la adopcion de tecnologias mas eficientes de produccion y empaque.
