Abstract
While the use of silica hydrogels to remove haze forming proteins from beer has long been known, it is not so widely known that by changing certain process conditions during the manufacture of silica gels, their average particle size and particle size distribution can be altered. If the appropriate range of particle sizes is achieved, the silica gel acquires the properties of a filter aid, enabling it to be used as a partial or even total substitute for kieselguhr bodyfeed while still fulfilling its usual function as a colloidal stabilizing agent.
