Abstract
The environmental effects of the brewing industry are summarized. Current and prospective European legislation, both at Community level and in individual countries, is discussed. The main problem is to reconcile the strict environmental safeguards demanded by public opinion in individual countries with the free trade requirements of the Single Market. As an example, the diverse policies on the control of beer packaging waste in different countries (both EEC members and countries considered likely to become members in the foreseeable future) are listed.
