Abstract
Increasing public concern over environmental issues in the USA and the legislation introduced as a result are discussed with particular reference to brewing. At the time of writing, the law on air pollution had recently been made stricter, that on water pollution and hazardous wastes was expected to follow suit, and legislation to impose compulsory recycling and waste reduction measures (e.g. in packaging) was expected. Problems could arise if such legislation is not passed at federal level, since individual state and/or local authorities might then take measures inconsistent with those in force in other parts of the country.
