Abstract
Recent and proposed Japanese environmental legislation is summarized. Action taken by the Kirin Brewery Company to reduce pollution and waste production is described. The company has formed an environmental protection department at its head office. Plans to reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, to increase the recycling of wastes and to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust fumes of distribution vehicles are presented.
