Cause and prevention of problems during grain transfer within the brewery.

Abstract
Problems arising during transfer are discussed and experiences at Anheuser Busch reported. Mechanical conveying systems when used for malt cause less damage but drawbacks are difficult sanitation. With pneumatic systems used to convey malt, damage varies from system to system. Grain breakage and degradation affect product quality and yield. This also applies to grain breakage after mashing. A dense phase pneumatic system damages malt much less than a dilute phase pneumatic system. Suppression and venting are effective ways of combating the effects of an explosion and fire. The Halon 1301 suppression system is assessed for efficiency and toxicity.
