Abstract
As the first generation of electronic control systems installed in the 1980s reaches the end of their useful lives, the industry is now pre-sented with the problem of installing replacements while maintaining plant output. When faced with the problem of replacing a control sys-tem, this paper examines engineering tools and methods to minimize risk to plant output, while achieving the objectives of the retrofit. With examples, it examines outdated automation systems, the criteria for automation system retrofits, current technology, future technology trends and describes a suitable upgrade path suitable for the examples given. It explains the rationale of the decision process when deciding how best to meet the plant's long-term objectives, the medium term plan associated with an automation system retrofit and the short-term plans deployed at critical phases of such a retrofit.
