Abstract
A number of research advances in ethanol production are discussed. These include genetic modification of some alcohol-producing micro-organisms, high gravity brewing/ethanol tolerance/rapid fermentations, the Symba fermentation process, the Ex-Ferm process, various systems of continuous fermentation, the use of immobilised micro-organisms, the use of Zymomonas, the acetone-butanol-ethanol process and pentose fermentation. 41 refs.
