Abstract
Fat Head’s Brewing’s collaboration with Barley Brown’s Beer was an assertive display of modern American Pacific Northwest hops. It held to the West Coast IPA tradition of being clear, on the drier side, with big Pacific Northwest hop aroma; however, the 2019 Special Hoperations had a restrained 65 IBU and was more aligned for the modern palate as opposed to following Fat Head’s more typical “Uncivilized & Aggressive” mantra. This beer was the first use of Fat Head’s new BrauKon HopBack Pellet, which was used in tandem with their HopBack Pro for Mosaic whole-cone hops. Brewers without such equipment are encouraged to be creative with hop stands, late whirlpool additions, or external strainer baskets.
