Program Objectives

This is an online independent study beer server training program designed for front-of-the-house bartenders, wait staff, retail clerks, and duty managers who want to invest in expanding their knowledge of beer service fundamentals: beer styles, proper handling and presentation of beer. Better understanding of the beers you sell could increase your average ticket and your tips!

Students will gain access to a copy of the first five chapters of the Beer Steward Handbook covering:

  • Serving and Presentation of Beer

Participants Receive

The first five chapters of the Beer Steward Handbook

The Beer Steward Handbook is a peer-reviewed textbook written by experienced brewing professionals and brewmasters. The handbook presents a wide range of topics never before collected in such detail in one text. This handbook is the industry standard for professionals in the wholesale and retail beer industry. As an Associate you will be able to access pdf files of the first five handbook chapters.

The online exam

The exam consists of 65 multiple-choice questions that are based on the first five chapters of the Beer Steward Handbook. The exam is one hour long and open book, you can take the test on any computer with an internet connection.  Upon successful completion of the exam, you will receive the Associate Beer Steward Certificate from the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, North America’s oldest professional brewing association, which is renowned for its work in advancing brewing education and professional development since 1887.

Recognition as a graduate

Upon successful completion of the examination, the participant will be listed as a graduate on the MBAA Beer Steward website.

Front-of-the-house bartenders, wait staff, retail clerks, and duty managers who want to learn more about beer service and beer sever fundamentals, including the relationship of beer to human history, how beer is made and the flavors that are shaped into the myriad of styles across the world, what those styles are, and how to present them most effectively to your customers.
