In 1958 the formation of a Caribbean District of the MBAA was first thought of by Chuck Frizzell who wrote to Tony Kelly and Paul Geddes in Jamaica to ask if they were interested. They were, and from then on Tony Kelly organized the formation of the new district by writing to Brewmasters throughout the area from British Guiana in the South, to Puerto Rico in the North, and rounding up the active members as founder members. Application for a "Charter" was eventually made in March 1961 as pledges were obtained from the following members who were keen to become Charter Members. Charles W. Frizzell, Frederick Dallmayr, Frank P. Brogniez, Peter d'Aguiar, Keith L. Chandler, Peter Abbott, Paul H. Geddes, William H. Hedmann, Michael F. Porter, Antony G. Kelly, Maximiliam C Von Bose and Frank Columna.
The following were elected as Officers of the District by ballot in June 1961: Antony G. Kelly, President; Charles W. Frizzell, Vice-President; William H. Hedmann, Secretary; Michael F. Porter, Treasurer.
The Charter was presented at the 74th Anniversary Convention in Montreal on September 25, 1961. The Caribbean District had the singular honor of being the only district to receive its Charter at a Convention held outside the limits of the USA. A meeting of the District was held at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel on the 27th of September. Present at the meeting were Tony Kelly, Charles Frizzell, William H. Hedmann, Paul Geddes, Frank Columna and Peter Abbott. Plans were made to hold the first Convention in Jamaica on the 4th and 5th of May 1962, with Desnoes and Geddes limited as hosts.
The convention got off to a good start with a most enjoyable cocktail party held at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Tony Kelly on the 3rd of May. Registration of the 80 Conventioneers took place at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club eight mile west of Kingston in the heart of the sugar estates. A business meeting for the Active and Associate members was held, and seventeen members were present. It was decided to hold the next Convention in Puerto Rico and the following Officers were elected: Mr. Charles Frizzell, President; Mr. Tony Kelly, Vice-President; Mr. Frederick Dallmayr, Secretary; Mr. Ramon Pizzini Vega, Treasurer; Mr. Julio Sanchez, Technical Chairman; to take over the duties immediately after the Convention.
A technical session was held in the hospitality room at the Red Stripe Brewery on Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. A most interesting series of papers were presented by the following: Earl Stewart, Charles Frizzell, John Davies, Albert Byer, William Hedmann, Michael Porter, Paul Geddes, Tony Kelly, Robert Halerow, and Peter d'Aguiar. Frank Columna, from the Dominican Republic, acted as Moderator.
On the evening of May 4th, prior to the banquet, the entire group was entertained at a reception at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Phippard in a manner that would have done justice to a lawn party at the White House. The banquet was given by Desnoes and Geddes at the Casa Monte Hotel up in the hills above Kingston, with 127 members and guests present. The speakers included Tony Kelly, who outlined the history of the District, and introduced the new Officers, and Robert Bopp who brought greetings from President Carl Strauss. Jack McCabe presented Tony Kelly with a handsome gavel on behalf of District New York as a gift from the oldest district to the most recent one.
