Abstract
The requirements of the ISO 9000 series of standards for quality assurance are outlined. Topics covered include the establishment of a company policy on quality, the responsibilities of senior management, documentation, the regular reviewing of system effectiveness, the reviewing of contracts with external suppliers of goods and services to bring them into line with internal quality policy, design and development, the purchasing of materials and equipment, product identification and traceability, process control, inspection and testing, the calibration of measuring instruments, the inspection/test status of products and the control of products which do not conform to specification, corrective action and the tracing of the causes of problems in order to identify and implement measures to prevent their recurrence, the handling, storage, packaging and distribution of products, quality records, internal quality auditing, training requirements, the use of statistical techniques, the potential benefits of a formally organized quality management system for brewing companies, and the further development of a quality management system which is already certified as conforming to one of the ISO 9000 standards.
