Abstract
The conversion of the Miller Brewing Company's seven breweries, with a total of 32 canning lines, to a new type of can with a slightly smaller diameter lid (2.25 instead of 2.375 inches) made of thinner metal and also having a differently formed neck, is described, including the planning of the conversion project, the manufacture and testing of the new cans and lids, the modifications to canning line equipment, the involvement of suppliers and customers, and the problems of maintaining canned beer production during the transition from the old style cans to the new type. Recommendations for the implementation of such large scale projects (which in the case described took two years to complete) are presented.
