Abstract
Active carbon is a widely used filtration medium in the Beverage industry. Each year around 110 tons of carbon are used in the UK brewing industry and 1000 tons in the USA which in comparison to other secondary treatment chemicals is no small beer. Yet the science and technology of its manufacture and use is understood by few other than those who work in the 'black arts' and to most users active carbon gets its name simply due to the fact that it is 'black and gets everywhere'.
