Abstract
This paper deals with flow measurement in brewing, laying particular stress on consistent accuracy. The author stresses the usefulness of flow measurement technology both in the maintenance of product quality by ensuring consistency of composition and in the enhancement of production efficiency. The operating principles and the advantages and disadvantages of the three most common types of flowmeter, namely the positive displacement meter, mass meter and electromagnetic flow transmitter, are summarised. The principal applications, namely measurement of liquor, wort, liquid adjuncts etc., in the brewhouse, diluting down to final gravity after high gravity brewing, and filling (particularly kegs) and the most suitable types of flowmeter for each are discussed.
