The application of crossflow microfiltration has been investigated in relation to (1) extract recovery from loose trub suspensions, (2) beer recovery from tank bottoms/yeast concentration and (3) sterile beer filtration. Available crossflow configurations, equipment and membrane are assessed experimentally. For all 3 case studies crossflow filtration was found to be a suitable alternative to kieselguhr. However, the present stage of development will not make crossflow filtration operate economically in all parts of the brewing process. For pay back analysis transmembrane flux, hydrodynamic aspects, cleaning procedure, energy demand etc., need to be considered. The development process of new porous materials to create novel filtration lattices is discussed.
