Abstract
As the cost of waste disposal and fuel increases, the utilization of waste generated on site as fuel becomes more attractive. The Christian Schmidt Brewing Co. (Philadelphia) carried out a preliminary study to decide whether an investment in waste to energy plant could be justified. Information on the type of waste, BTU values, moisture content, material flow, cost of conveying waste, existing waste collection system, potential use of energy generated, electrical requirements for co- generation and boiler room efficiencies was collected and evaluated. When a waste material audit had been completed, various waste handling methods were studied and a review of all the realistic designs prepared. When the design criteria had been identified bids for an overall feasibility study were solicited. The system finally selected includes a 250 PSIG two pass fire tube waste heat recovery boiler with 1,500 sq. ft. of heat transfer surface. The system was designed and installed under the supervision of the American Energy Corporation. The complete installation, the manner in which it interfaces with existing facilities and its on-line operation is described. (See also following abstract).
