Abstract
The analyses used for the determination of the physical and chemical characteristics of bottle washer waste caustic are reviewed. Objective and design criteria for a caustic reclaim centre are described in which the waste caustic is first coarse filtered and then allowed to settle overnight. The clarified caustic is reused and the sedimented sludge centrifuged. Any excess caustic is neutralised and sent to the sewers. Problems encountered during installation and initial operation of the caustic reclaim centre are discussed.
