Gerhardt, F.

Abstract
Solar energy, directly or indirectly, is the source of almost all of the energy on earth. Although the total amount reaching the earth daily is vast, it is diffuse and intermittent. Two problems must be overcome in its direct economic utilisation; the first is concentration and the second storage. The problem of concentration seems to have been resolved for many uses, whereas storge is still the subject of many R & D programmes. Examples of solar energy to space heating and cooling, the food processing industry, the Rankline cycle engine and some 'exotic' applications are covered. In brewing, the actual use of solar energy to pasteurization and some other potential applications are discussed.
