Abstract
A plant breeder gives his views on a subject of common interest with the malting and brewing industry: the enlargement of the present malting barley geographic production area through the development of a new crop, winter malting barley. A winter barley with sufficient cold hardiness and good malting quality would open the eastern U. S. and Canada for malting barley production. The genetic and technical breeding problems involved in the development of such a variety are discussed.
