Abstract
This paper discusses the sensing elements and criteria used in industry to accurately measure such significant process variables as flow, temperature, pressure, level, pH, conductivity, density, and turbidity. The types of primary sensing instruments are described and in addition, the expression of flow accuracies and the types of transmission signals from sensors are considered. Emphasis is placed on the proper selection of primary sensing elements as a necessary part of designing an instrumentation system to efficiently control a process or plant.
