President's Message

As we look forward to 2012, there are a number of exciting opportunities for the MBAA. Please mark your calendars for next July 28-August 1 to attend The World Brewing Congress. A “Call for Papers” was just issued and we encourage as many practical papers and/or posters as possible. We are expecting a fantastic venue in one of the most popular towns for craft breweries. The Beer Steward Program has big plans for next year after training almost 1,000 wholesalers, brewers and beer professionals in 2011. In 2012, we are planning to continue in-house training to wholesalers and brewer clients and to expand the open enrollment seminar offerings to cities around the U.S. and Canada. We will be counting on the help of our members with venues and promotions for these seminars. If your district would like to host a seminar please contact Technical Director Karl Ockert at kockert@mbaa.com. We have completed the printing of the International Brewers Symposium on Yeast and will have this publication available in the new year. Many of us who signed up for the book are anxiously awaiting delivery.

The results are in and it looks like MBAA had another well attended and financially successful conference this year. We had excellent presentations and company in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The next and final success criteria for the conference is receiving the manuscripts from our presenters to publish in the Technical Quarterly. I encourage all presenters to please make this a priority so we are able to share the information with our TQ readers.

I recently attended the Brau Beviale 2011 in Nuremburg, Germany. Pentair Food & Beverage graciously hosted the first MBAA District Europe hospitality event. Following a kind introduction from Pentair senior management, Jens Voigt, MBAA District Europe president, welcomed everyone to the first district meeting since receiving its charter in 2010 and introduced the new district Vice President, Gerrit Bluemelhuber. The event was well attended with approximately 25-30 people representing various MBAA Districts in the U.S. along with MBAA Past President Gary Luther and several independent members including Edgar Scheller who joined the MBAA in 1954!

I also just returned from the Institute of Brewing & Distilling's 125th Anniversary Presidential Dinner, London U.K. As MBAA President, I received and accepted an official invitation to this special event recognizing 125 years of existence. The event was held at the historical Guildhall in London with approximately 650 attendees. Among the invitees included MBAA Past President, Rob McCaig, MBAA TQ Editorial Board Chair, Tom Shellhammer, and International Brewers Symposium Planning Chair, Alex Speers. MBAA and IBD continue to forge a strong and cooperative relationship.

As we approach the end of 2011, on behalf of the MBAA Executive Board, I would like to thank all of our volunteer committee chairs, committee representatives, technical director, and staff at MBAA Headquarters for all of their hard work and commitment to making the MBAA a viable and energized organization.

Happy holidays and best wishes for a prosperous new year!

Brewing and Malting Science Short Course Adjourns
Another successful short course of 54 students from Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and Japan concluded Thursday, November 10 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison campus. Students spent two weeks learning the malting and brewing processes taught by 23 instructors on topics from raw materials (barley, hops and water) through the brewing and cellar processes culminating in a beer sensory class to help identify both positive and negative flavors in beer.

The short course classes not only provide an exceptional atmosphere for formal lectures and learning but a unique opportunity for classmates to get to know each other, learn and establish long lasting network ties. This year’s brewing class has already put together its own Facebook page.

A big thanks to all the instructors who volunteered their time and expertise to help educate our industry peers!  Course photos are available online.
