President's Message |

As winter turns to spring and summer our industry has begun to heat up as well. The MBAA Executive
Committee has been very busy, meeting at least monthly (sometimes twice a month) to make sure all of the initiatives are on track. We just held our spring Board of Governors
(BOG) meeting by WEBEX on Thursday, April 28 with great participation and input from all of the
districts. We will be sending a one- to two-page summary of that meeting within the next couple of weeks
to all members. As usual, the district BOG reps will fill their districts in on the details over the next couple of months at the local meetings.
Our newest district, District Europe, is planning a get-together at the upcoming EBC in Glasgow in May; further information is to follow. Hopefully any District Europe member
who is attending the EBC will stop by. I will be there and will look forward to meeting you. Of course, any other MBAA members attending are welcome too!
Cheers,
Rob McCaig
MBAA President

Resources
for District Technical Speakers |
|
District meetings provide a great mix of fun social networking and professional brewing education. Technical presentations at district meetings provide avenues to bring us up to date with the latest innovations in our craft as well as sharing expertise and education on the issues you confront day to day as brewers. Many breweries use the district meetings as a source of continuing educating in the brewing sciences for their employees while also seeing the value of joining the brewing community and establishing ties that can both help out with daily production issues as well as learning new techniques or processes they can bring to their own plant.
The
MBAA website
has a listing of speakers willing to present at your
next district meeting. Many are suppliers who can share expertise in their particular fields; some are retired brewers who have years of experience and can help flatten out a steep learning curve. The list of topics is diverse and wide:
filtration, yeast, sustainability issues, keg and packaging systems, CIP and cleaning chemicals, clarification, and beer stability. Before planning the technical portion of your next district meeting, I encourage you to check out the district speaker list and make some inquiries. If you want to be added to the list, please contact
Amanda
Aranowski or
me with a short description of yourself and your services. Education brings innovation and the district meetings are an ideal venue to promote both!
Cheers,
Karl Ockert
MBAA Technical Director

District St. Louis Welcomes
Chris White, the Craft Brewing Authority on Yeast
|
|
District St. Louis members were in abundance on Thursday, April 21, for an evening with Chris White, owner of White Labs in San Diego, CA, and the generally recognized authority on yeast for the craft brewing industry. Aside from the technical aspects of yeast production, preservation, and delivery systems, the evolution of White Labs from the beginning in 1995 and its response to the growth of the craft brewing market to what it is today was quite interesting. The meeting also served as the occasion to honor our oldest member, Fritz Zenthoefer, with a birthday cake for his 90th birthday. We thank our sponsor for our April meeting, EP Minerals, and our host for the meeting, the Schlafly St. Louis Brewery & Taproom.
We are entering the summer season and will not schedule any dinner meetings until October, but we do look forward to our annual golf outing scheduled for Friday, September 16, at Pevely Farms golf club in western St. Louis
County. Our Golf Chair, Daniel Jones, has issued a good weather decree and is putting together what promises to be a great time! The
district does plan, however, to have at least two educational opportunities for members focusing on specific brewhouse operations during the summer. These will be announced in greater detail at a later date.

In Memoriam |

Former MBAA Member Louis Kogelman passed away on February 10, 2011. He joined in 1943 and was a former member of District Philadelphia.
It is with great sadness that we announce that Greg Beaston, Milwaukee Brewing Team Leader, passed away April 6, 2011, in the company of his family.
He joined MBAA in 1998 and was a former member of
District Milwaukee.
Greg was struck with cancer a few years ago and fought a courageous battle that reflected his true zest for life and love of family and friends. We will miss Greg dearly and ask all of you to pray for his family.
Greg was a passionate and fun-loving man. He loved brewing and was very good at it. Greg worked in all areas of brewing during his career, beginning as a brewer with G. Heileman and progressing through greater levels of expertise with Hoster, Stroh, Miller, and MillerCoors Brewing Company. He knew the process and most importantly, he knew his people. Greg was a great teacher and had fun doing the work. For those of us who were privileged to work around him, we'll never forget some of his more famous phrases like
"Have a blue day" (blue was good) and "Dont ask how we got it in spec." Greg was a special person.
We would respectfully request that district officers or relatives notify
Cheryl Kruchten as soon as possible upon the death of one of our members or retirees: Cheryl Kruchten, Member Services Representative, Master Brewers Association of the Americas, 3340 Pilot Knob Rd., St. Paul, MN 55121, U.S.A. Direct Phone: +1.651.994.3801; Main Phone: +1.651.454.7250.
