Abstract
The economic and other factors which have encouraged the development of a very high degree of automation in the Japanese brewing industry are described together with the principles underlying the design of computer based process control systems, the structure of a computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) system typical of those found in modern Japanese breweries and the trends expected in future developments in this field.
