Abstract
A summary of the major environmental problems in Canada and the measures taken by the federal, provincial and local authorities to cope with them is followed by an account of the efforts of the brewing industry to reduce pollution and waste production. Most Canadian breweries now use natural gas, which burns more cleanly than other fuels. Brewhouse heat recovery systems are coming into use. In order to comply with increasingly strict standards for effluent discharges, many breweries have installed treatment plants. The recycling and/or processing for further utilization elsewhere of such wastes and by-products as are suitable for such treatment is encouraged, together with the adoption of measures to reduce water consumption.
