Our longtime print newsletter has officially made the transition to an online publication. This will allow for news from the MBAA and its Districts to reach you more quickly and efficiently. As you scroll down, you will recognize many features from the former print version of the
MBAA Communicator. As this weekly edition evolves, new features, a wider variety of news stories, and other new items will be incorporated into the
MBAA Communicator.
As the editor, it is my hope that MBAA members will utilize this new version of the
MBAA Communicator as their go-to source for all MBAA-related news and information. For our members to get the most value from these weekly editions, a steady flow of information will be required. All Districts are strongly encouraged to forward any information, such as meeting schedules, upcoming meeting announcements, meeting stories and photos, etc., for inclusion in the
MBAA Communicator.
So, please take a few minutes and see what the new MBAA Communicator has to offer. If you have any questions or comments regarding the new
MBAA Communicator, do not hesitate to contact me. I am looking forward to bringing you the most current, useful, and interesting news and information on a weekly basis, so be sure to check your e-mail for the
MBAA Communicator every Thursday.

Many North American brewers started their careers at UC Davis under the tutelage of an inspiring professor who taught the craft of brewing. For more than 30 years, Professor Michael J. Lewis led the UC Davis Brewing Science curriculum, building from an idea to a program with a worldwide reputation for excellence. So many undergraduate and graduate students, as well as numerous extension students, have benefited directly from Michael’s wisdom and experience.
To recognize the many contributions Michael has made to his students and the brewing industry, we have created a new endowed fund named in his honor and dedicated to supporting brewing science students at UC Davis. Students who have been taught by Michael and those who recognize his many contributions are invited to participate.

Practical and prescient, those are the two words that come to mind in describing Bill Owen’s new book
Craft Whiskey Distilling, published by the American Distilling Institute. Just like his book,
How to Build a Small Brewery, Draft Beer in Ten Days, self-published almost 30 years ago, Owen seems to anticipate the real-world questions, concerns, and confusions of want-to-be craft distillers, most of whom having cut their teeth as home or craft brewers desire to venture forth into the production of vodka, gin, whiskey, rum, etc. Distilling principles, styles, procedures, equipment, economics, licensing, and even a three-year payback scheme called a “Down and Dirty Business Plan” are generously supported by resource lists, websites, and recommended reading, making this book the best single-stop shopping resource for those interested in learning more about or diving into craft whiskey distilling. The legendary craft brewing pioneer and father of pumpkin ale has again “lain across the wire” for the rest of us to climb over into the spirits world.
Sadly we must report the passing of the following MBAA members: Louis Blecher (District New York); William G. Coleman (District St. Louis); Brian Herlihy (Milwaukee); Marcel E. Melis (Independent); Thomas R. Montgomery, Jr. (District St. Louis); and Robert W. Wagner (District Milwaukee).
