Title:
Brewing at a Baseball Stadium Brewery
Abstract:
Baseball and Beer are two of America’s favorite pastimes. Since 1995 these two great American pastimes have been uniquely linked when Sandlot Brewery became the first brewery in a ballpark. Small scale brewing inside a Major League Sporting venue presents many challenges and opportunities. There is also the challenge of being owned by one of the largest brewers in the world MillerCoors. This presentation will expand on the challenges, benefits, and special circumstances of not only brewing inside a Major League Baseball Stadium but being owned by a major international brewer.
C.V. - Brief:
John Legnard came west from Connecticut in 1986 hopes of becoming a veterinarian. Like may college students he was distracted by beer….but in a good way. During his completion of his degrees in Microbiology and Biology at Colorado State University (CSU) in Ft Collins he was convinced to take a home brewing class sparking his interest in brewing. After Graduation from CSU John was hired as a Quality Control Technician at the Coors Brewery in Golden. A seemingly endless stream of samples, Petri dishes and micro work in the enormous brewery convinced John he wanted to work in small brewery. His home brewing skills had caught the attention of Ft Collins businessman preparing to open his own microbrewery. John decided it was time to go pro he quit his Coors job. He invested all the money he had saved for an engagement ring in the startup brewery. He dumped the girl and started down his path to his brewing career. After toiling for many months doing the manual labor of converting an old warehouse into a brewery, HC Berger Brewing Co was born. John worked at HC Berger Brewing for over 3 years in all phases of the business including; Brewing, Fermenting, Filtration, Packaging, Distribution, Marketing and Sales. Along the way he has helped with the first brews at several startup breweries including Great Divide and Left Hand. John has been at Sandlot Brewery since it opened in 1995. In addition to his nearly 20 years of hands on experience John completed his Diploma in Brewing from the IBD in 2010.
