A "4-club" wind howled at Springfield Golf & Country Club in Guelph on Friday, September 7 as 136 golfers set out at 1:00pm to complete 18 holes in a "best ball" format. And the scores reflected it! Springfield is a great course for tournaments, and allows most groups to score under par - last year only 5 groups were over par (and this is typical for most years). However, Mother Nature decided it was time to do something about those low scores, and 14 of the 34 groups were at or over par this year! Perhaps it was also the sticky 30°C humid temperature... or the 4 minutes of torrential, horizontal rain that was enough to soak everyone caught out in it to the skin... or maybe it was the fine bevy of brews supplied by the 2 gracious cart-girls... But in the end, we did have a winner. In fact 2 groups tied at -11 (well done, in those conditions!) Congratulations to the group of Rankin, O'Brien, Robbins, and Bentley, and to the group of Canary, Durand, Ellingham and Fobes.
Congratulations, also, to our individual winners. Men's Long Drive: Joel Manning; Women's LD: Alyson Black; Closest to the pins... on hole #4: John Lochner; hole #7: Luigi Fantin; hole #9 Lee Zacharczuk; hole #12: John Lochner; hole #14: Tom Gillan; and hole #17: Ed McCallum (no hole-in-one for Ed this year, but back-to-back wins on #17!); and Closest to the Keg on hole#1: Darryl Marshall.
124 stayed for a great dinner featuring delicious chicken, ribs and corn-on-the-cob. Thanks to the Springfield staff, who worked diligently to ensure that we finished dinner on schedule. As usual, there was barely enough room to fit all the prizes on the prize table... sincere thanks to all the suppliers and breweries who contributed prizes, and to our 19 hole sponsors (which benefits the Education Committee's scholarship fund). Thanks, also, to Sleeman for donating 2 kegs of beer for lunch.
Your committee received many favourable comments this year. The pace of play was good; we went straight to dinner after golf, and began dinner on time; and we worked hard to announce winners during the meal, so that the evening wouldn't drag out too late. We did hear some "prize trading" took place, which we encouraged. Please understand that with this large a group, pre-assigned prizes allowed us to finish up far earlier than in previous years, when golfers spent literally hours agonizing over which prize to select... We also intend to review with Springfield the idea of a 3rd cart-girl for next year.
Thanks to all the members and their guests for coming out this year. The day was a great success! Your committee looks forward to seeing everybody again next year, on Friday, September 5, 2008.
Cheers,
Don, Bob, Helen and Cate
