Approximately 45 members and guests attended the September Technical Meeting held in London at Labatt.
George Agius of Johnson-Diversey provided a presentation on “Sanitation: Combining Old & New”. George reviewed conventional practices as well as newer practices to address micro issues in the brewery focusing on the effects of mechanical action, pH, temperature and sanitizing agent and the combinations thereof.
Jenny Gerster of Labatt/Inbev provided a presentation on “Unravelling Beer through Use of Gas-Chromatography Olfactometry”. Jenny discussed how a gas chromatograph fitted with an olfactory port was used by technicians to identify different aroma compounds of a beer sample by smelling the compounds as they eluted from the column. Jenny further explained how this technology can be used to help trouble shoot or map the different aromas in a given beer sample for comparative purposes.
The MBAC Technical Committee would like to thank both George and Jenny for their time and sharing of knowledge with our membership. We would also like to thank our host, Labatt London Brewery for making this day a great success.
