District Ontario Barley Field Day 2002 On Thursday, July 11, 2002, approximately 60 District Ontario members gathered at the Elora Research Station of the University of Guelph for a beautiful day in the crop fields, in the classroom and under the barbecue tent. The day began with a number of presentations, lead by the announcement of the first Master Brewers Association of Canada 50th Anniversary Cereals Award. To mark the 50th anniversary of Barley Field Day, District Ontario has presented the University of Guelph with a $1500 scholarship to be awarded to the top graduate student in the U. of G. cereal grains program. Professor Alan Sullivan acknowledged the new scholarship and made its first award to Ingvar Bjornsson. Ingvar, a native if Iceland, is completing his research on barley lodging at the Elora Research Station. Among the technical presentations of the day were Bruce French of ConAgra Malting who gave an update on new barley varieties, Stephen Kell of Parrish and Heimbecker, Limited, who provided a presentation on an Ontario malting barley initiative, and Sean Gatin, also of ConAgra Malting, who presented an overview of the 2002 barley crop. Finally, Dr. Duane Falk of the University of Guelph discussed the barley and beer scene in Australia followed by a tour and discussion of the Research Station’s cereal field plots.
After time in the fields, Canada Malting Company, Limited, graciously provided refreshments and a barbecue lunch enjoyed by all.
