43rd Annual Convention of MBAA District CaribbeanApril 21-24, 2004 Final Programme HOST COUNTRY 43RD MBAA DISTRICT CARIBBEAN CONVENTIONThe Dominican Republic, located in the heart of the Caribbean, to the west of Jamaica and Cuba and to the east of Puerto Rico, is the second largest nation of the area occupying the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles, with Haiti occupying the remaining western portion. Delimited by the Caribbean Sea on the south coast and the Atlantic Ocean to the north, it has an extension of 48,380 square kilometers, 1,288 kilometers of coastline and close to 300 kilometers of white sand beaches. The Dominican Republic owns the Pico Duarte, the highest point in the Caribbean rising over 3,175 meters in the Cordillera Central, and Lake Enriquillo the only salt water lake in the world inhabited by crocodiles, located in the lowest point in the region falling 46 meters below sea level in the southwest part. Tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing for export are the key sectors of the economy and domestic industry is based on the processing of agricultural products, oil refining, and chemicals. The country is ruled by a representative democratic government voted every four years in competitive elections. The government is composed of three branches: executive, legislative and judicial. The Dominican Republic enjoys a peaceful social environment and political stability; even though Haiti, its neighbor, has experienced an alarming rise in civil and political unrest. |
