President's Message
I had the opportunity in July to attend one of our new Beer Steward Certification programs, and I was very proud of what MBAA has been able to achieve with this program. First of all, the presenters were outstanding, presenting the material in a fun and educational manner. The materials for the program were very professional.

If the comments from the other attendees so far (around 400) were even half as positive as what I heard from the attendees in July, we have a program that provides just what the industry is looking for - a program that delivers a clear message on beermanship to the industry, as well as elevating beer in status. There are several other similar programs out there right now, but the MBAA program comes with a very comprehensive book and well-respected and informed presenters, as well as 150 odd years of brewing experience garnered by MBAA. Hats off to our new Technical Director Karl Ockert and Steve Holle, the drivers of this program. Well done!

We will be holding a Beer Steward Certification session prior to the MBAA Annual Conference in Minneapolis, MN, this fall, so this is your chance to get a look at this truly outstanding new program.

Cheers!

Rob McCaig

The Beer Steward Program Is Rolling!
The MBAA Beer Steward program, aimed at educating beer wholesalers and retailers, has been gathering momentum since it launched in January of this year. The Beer Steward Certificate (BSC) program has now trained more than 500 beer professionals and is on track to almost double that number by the end of the year.

The BSC program features a day-long Understanding Beer Flavor seminar that trains participants to identify and describe all the positive flavor characters of the great beers available in the market today, study of the Beer Steward Handbook, and completion of an hour-long online examination. The Understanding Beer Flavor seminar will be available to members at a special discounted rate at the MBAA Annual Conference in Minneapolis, MN, on Thursday, October 13. Seating will be limited, so check the registration site to sign up. Read more...

District St. Louis Gets Ready for Its Annual Golf Tournament

The summer season with its heat and humidity are upon us, but we do look forward to the MBAA District St. Louis Annual Golf Tournament scheduled for Friday, September 16, at Pevely Farms golf club in western St. Louis County. Traditionally, our golf chair has ordered fine golf weather every year, along with a healthy supply of beers from St. Louis area producers to make for a great day! Get your foursomes together and fill out those invitations when you receive them via e-mail.

Our recent District Summer Education Program (SEP) member training session was a sold-out success. Joe Lazzara, principal consultant with JL Process Design, presented on all the objectives desired during brewkettle boil and the complexities of the interactions affecting wort constituents during boiling. Thanks to Joe and to Anheuser-Busch for allowing us the use of the Busch Learning Center.
