Registration Will Be Opening Soon! |
|
Registration will be opening soon for the
2011 MBAA Annual Conference, which will be held October 13-15
in Minneapolis, MN. Save when you register by September 8. If you have not considered this meeting as a viable option for you, think again! This year we have a packed two-day technical program with loads of opportunities to learn about new technology, network with peers, and listen to great speakers on troubleshooting and problem solving. In addition to 9 practical workshops, we will have 33 oral presentations and 32 posters from a mix of students, researchers, and brewers from Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Serbia-Montenegro, the Netherlands, and the United States. New this year, we also have a pre-conference opportunity that is dedicated to pub brewers - the Pub Brewers Mini Camp.
Jennifer Talley, brew master for Squatters Pub and Brewery in Utah, will host an all-day workshop and, along with other presenters, will address topics from malt analysis, hop selection, yeast management, and brewing calculations to rebuilding a pump and setting up a small lab, as well as other key topics. The goal is to send you back to your brewery with a full tool bag of practical applications that you can instantly put to use.
MBAA has always prided itself on knowledge sharing and practical troubleshooting. No matter the size and complexity of your brewery, I can guarantee you will find the technical program at this year's annual conference a very valuable experience. Look for your registration packet this month and get registered early!

Wastewater Treatment Basics
The term "wastewater treatment" means many different
things to different people. Part of this is due to the broad realm that is
covered by the term. The subject can be broken down into two main groups:
publicly owned utility sewage plants and private treatment plants.
Publicly owned utility plants treat sewage so it is safe to discharge to the
environment. Private treatment plants are typically owned and operated as a part
of a business. They are usually put in place when wastewater from business
processes end up with "stuff" in it that can neither be discharged to public
plants nor to the environment (as a part of an NPDES permit). Most public
treatment plants have discharge limits established for businesses that define
what is acceptable to have in the water when it leaves a business.
Business-operated treatment plants are frequently called "wastewater
pretreatment plants," because after the wastewater is treated by the business it
enters the sewer system and is further processed by the public utility. The goal
of this pretreatment is the removal of only the "stuff" in the water that isn't
allowed by the public utility.
The "stuff" could be metals (lead, copper, mercury), grease and oil, or
phosphates. In the case of breweries, reduction of BOD (biochemical oxygen
demand, a broad measure of the level of organic waste in the water) and
adjustment of pH is frequently all that is needed.
The exact method of removal of the objectionable parameter in the wastewater is
plant specific. What works for one wastewater stream may need to be modified for
another similar stream. In general, however, one or more additives are
introduced into the water to cause precipitation of "stuff," which is then
filtered from the water.
There are continual improvements being made in the chemical additives used for
this purpose. If you are operating a waste treatment process, your chemical
supplier should be performing periodic testing of new products to make sure you
are using the best and most efficient technology available.
Should you have questions regarding specific applications or want more
information about treating wastewater, we at Enerco are available to serve your
needs. Contact
