President's Message |
|
As we start the New Year, I would like to bring everybody up to date on some of the programs and projects that the MBAA is embarking on this year.
Membership Committee Chair Rebecca Jennings and her committee have launched a new membership program and are organizing an MBAA hospitality suite for the upcoming CBC meeting. In addition to recognizing the committee's efforts, we want to thank the Districts for their support.
MBAA-sponsored Spanish brewing/packaging courses will be held in South America early this year. This is the culmination of a lot of work by Ray Klimovitz, Guillermo Moscoso, and George Reisch. Our long-term plan is to provide top-shelf education programs for the brewing industry in other parts of the world.
For the first time ever, MBAA and ASBC will hold Brewing Summit 2010, in which ASBC and MBAA will each hold their conventions but will share an exhibition and a day of programming. Brewing Summit 2010 will be held in Providence, RI, June 15-20. Mary Pellettieri and her Technical Committee are putting together a fantastic education program for brewers of all sizes. District New England is participating by giving us a
"flavor" of the local breweries in the area. This will be a great opportunity to taste new and unique beers from the Northeast.
Travis Audet is spearheading a project to enable MBAA to teach the syllabus of the IBD Diploma in Brewing for North America. The discussions are on-going, and we are hoping to come to an agreement sometime in the near future.
While the economy struggles and changes in the
brewing industry continue, our organization is
growing stronger. We are adding new members. In
fact, we are ahead of membership numbers compared
with last year. If you are interested in joining any
of the committees or would like more information,
please visit the
website or contact the committee chair. MBAA thrives on volunteerism; I encourage all who have an interest to become involved in one of the most vibrant and exciting technical organizations in the brewing industry.

MBAA at the Craft Brewer Conference |
|
What better way to attract new members than for the MBAA to host a hospitality suite at the Craft Brewers Conference. District Milwaukee decided that this would be a great way to draw attention to the MBAA. After reaching out to District St. Paul/Minneapolis for help, we decided to involve as many Districts as are willing to participate. With that said, the MBAA hospitality suite will be open April 8-9 at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers. Districts have offered to make either a monetary contribution or to donate beer from their District breweries. The donations will go to cover the cost of the suite, appetizers, brochures and flyers, and any promotional materials. We are still looking for give-away items if anyone is interested in donating something from their District or company. There is still time to offer up your brewery's beer as well. I will provide more details as they become available.
Districts Milwaukee and St. Paul/Minneapolis would like to express our gratitude to the following Districts for their generous donations to the MBAA hospitality suite at the Craft Brewers Conference in April. Thank you to Districts Northwest, Mid-South, Western New York, Rocky Mountain, Texas, New England, Michigan, Mid-Atlantic, New York, Northern California, Southeast, Philadelphia, and Southern California. Your donations are very much appreciated and will go a long way to make this a great event for all. If you are interested in more information, please contact me at
mailto:rjennings@rahr.com.

MBAA Technical Director Notes - This Stuff Keeps Happening |
|
Many of you
will recall that the brewing industry had a problem back in the late 1980s with the chipboard being used to separate layers of empty beer cans. The solvent-like aromas from the chipboard was absorbed into the can lining and into the beer after pasteurization. Johnson & Johnson issued a massive recall
last week of over-the-counter drugs, including Tylenol, Motrin, and St. Joseph's aspirin, because of a moldy smell that has made people sick. Johnson & Johnson said the smell is caused by small amounts of a chemical associated with the treatment of wooden pallets. The FDA indicated the chemical can leach into the air and traced it to a facility in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico.
It was the second such recall in less than a month because of the smell, which regulators said was first reported to the company in 2008. Federal regulators criticized the company, saying it didn't respond to the complaints quickly enough, wasn't thorough in how it handled the problem, and didn't inform the FDA quickly. The recall includes some batches of Tylenol, Tylenol Extra Strength, Children's Tylenol, Tylenol 8 Hour, Tylenol Arthritis, Tylenol PM, Children's Motrin, Motrin IB, Benadryl, Rolaids, Simply Sleep, and St. Joseph's aspirin.
The New Brunswick, NJ, company said it is investigating the issue and will stop shipping products with the same materials on wooden pallets. It has asked suppliers to do so as well.
