Technical Director Retirement
You may have read the announcement in this week's e-mail from MBAA that I have informed the Executive Committee that I will
"hang it up" at the end of my current contract with MBAA, which expires at the end of the calendar year. I figure that after 11-plus years on the job, it's time to step aside and allow MBAA to reevaluate the job and search for a very qualified younger person who will bring new perspective to the job. This is definitely a period in the history of MBAA in which opportunities exist to essentially
"remake" MBAA in light of the realities of the modern worldwide brewing industry, and a new technical director can be a part of that process. I take this opportunity to thank all of our members and industry colleagues for all of the cooperation that I have received during these past 11 years. I will continue to run my consulting business (which is very active these days). Anyone who is interested in applying for the technical director position may contact me directly
at
rklimovitz@aol.com if they wish to have a deeper understanding of what the duties are.
Inge Russell Award
The MBAA Editorial Committee has selected this year's Inge Russell Best Paper Award, and the award will be presented to coauthors Georg Drexler and Christina Schönberger (Joh. Barth & Sohn), Benjamin Bailey (MillerCoors-Trenton), Andreas Gahr (HVG), Rebecca Newman, and Moritz Pöschl and Eberhard Geiger (Weihenstephan) for their paper,
"The Influence of Hop Harvest Date on Hop Aroma in Dry-hopped Beers" published in volume 46 (2009) of the MBAA
Technical Quarterly. The award will be presented at the 2010 MBAA Convention in Providence, RI.
Notes
I am sad to report that MBAA Past President John Hawley (1987-1988) had a stroke early in the year,
but he is recuperating. On a sadder note, his wife Carol had a stroke on April 7 and passed away a day later. A memorial service for Carol will be held in Toronto on August 7.

Technical Quarterly Paper Published |
|
"A Systematic Approach to Investigating Microbiological Infection Sources in the Brewing Process," by George Agius, Doug Funnell, and Troy Matteotti, has been published in the MBAA
Technical Quarterly.
Abstract
During the various stages of brewing that follow kettle boil, the product is vulnerable to infection by undesirable microorganisms. An infection can manifest itself as higher than normal counts for microorganisms or through the appearance of an undesirable microorganism that can harm the product. It may also be that a brewery is adhering to a new, more stringent set of microbiological standards. Meeting these new standards can present particular challenges for older breweries, since their process equipment was not designed with the new standards in mind. Finding the infection source is an important first step toward taking action to eliminate it. However, this can be a difficult task due to the large number of possible variables that exist at every stage of the process. Introduced materials, equipment design, poor hygienic procedures, or even environmental factors can all act as infection sources. In this paper a method to systematically investigate infection sources and eliminate suspect areas is described. In addition, some of the more common environmental, mechanical, and process issues that lead to microbiological infection are discussed.

District Ontario Holds 57th Annual Curling Bonspiel
|
|
MBAC
District Ontario was back on track this year for the 57th Annual Curling Bonspiel. With a new location at the Guelph Country Club, the event was converted to a lunch and curling affair and was met with great enthusiasm from the participants. Curlers of all levels were piped in for the event and helped polish the ice with brooms and butts to the appreciation of spectators. Curling is back in District Ontario
- bigger and better than ever. Thanks to all the sponsors, participants, and the new Curling Committee for a great day.

Breweries in St. Louis with active MBAA District members returned victorious from the 2010 World Beer Cup competition held at the Craft Brewers Conference in Chicago, winning two gold, one silver, and three bronze medals just in time to receive congratulations at the April 15 District Meeting held at the Schlafly Bottleworks and sponsored by King Filtration. A full house was on hand for speaker Greg Koch (CEO of Stone Brewing Company in southern California). Our gold-medal winners were Schlafly Kolsch from the St. Louis Brewery and Golden Pilsner from the Morgan Street Brewery and brewed by our District President Marc Gottfried. Michelob Pale Ale by Anheuser-Busch/InBev was awarded the silver medal in the Classic English-Style Pale Ale category. Three bronze medals were awarded to other AB-InBev products: Red Bridge (gluten-free), Landshark (tropical style lager), and Leffe Blonde (Belgian-style blonde ale).
