New Technical Quarterly Paper Published
"Go with the Flow: Pumps, Pipes, and Paranoia," by Michael J. Lewis, has been published in the MBAA Technical Quarterly.

 Abstract
Craft brewers are not always able to optimize the way water, wort, and beer flow in their breweries, and these shortcomings can have unpredictable, inconsistent, and usually deleterious effects on the beers they produce. Brewers do not always appreciate that these shortcomings are, in fact, shortcomings with imperatives for the product but assume they are just part of the daily trials and exigencies of brewing in a small brewery. “That’s the way I make my beer,” they might say. Some of these effects are simply a result of the way liquids flow in pipes and tanks, sometimes the result of the way materials with different qualities (e.g., specific gravity, temperature, and composition) react with each other, and sometimes the result of the way suspended particles behave in flowing systems. This paper looks at a number of specific examples of such behaviors that are relevant to craft breweries and suggests reasonable solutions.

It certainly was a scenic jaunt up Boulder Canyon to the destination. Read More...

"We brewers don't make beer, we just get all the ingredients together and the beer makes itself." —Fritz Maytag, President Anchor Brewing
