New Technical Quarterly Paper Published

"Carbon Footprints in Breweries,” by C. W. Bamforth, has been published in the MBAA Technical Quarterly.

Abstract

The carbon footprint forms part of the ecological footprint (which also embraces the energy and water footprints). As a group, these footprints focus attention on the importance of reducing use of the earth's resources, which will otherwise be exhausted. The carbon footprint emphasizes the risks to the climate of excessive production of greenhouse gases. This footprint logically relates closely to the use of energy. Studies have been performed that highlight the relative importance of diverse stages in the continuum from raw material production to beer storage by the consumer as contributors to the carbon footprint. Approaches, some radical, to minimizing the carbon footprint may be needed.
